These two phrases appear throughout NHLA communications, on our website, and even on the signage at our Memphis headquarters. Together, they reflect NHLA’s mission: to uphold the long-standing quality and credibility of North American hardwood grading standards while continuing to grow and adapt in the global marketplace.

Most members readily recognize the meaning behind STRONG ROOTS. The grading rules have been central to NHLA’s purpose since its founding in 1898. As the “Keepers of the Rules,” NHLA is responsible for maintaining and teaching these standards to the industry. Today, this mission is carried out through multiple education and training pathways. The newly branded National Hardwood Academy (NHA) offers the Inspector Training School’s full eight-week in-person grading course, along with a Hybrid option that blends classroom and online instruction. Short courses ranging from three to four days provide additional opportunities to build familiarity with the rules. NHLA’s national inspectors can also deliver on-site training at member facilities. Beyond education, the Association supports accuracy and confidence in grading through programs such as Strap and Seal inspections and the NHLA Facility Grade Certified designation. Together, these programs represent the foundation of our STRONG ROOTS.
GLOBAL REACH reflects the industry’s vital connection to international markets. Depending on the year, between 25 and 50 percent of North American hardwood lumber production is exported, underscoring the importance of global trade to our members. NHLA supports these efforts through partnerships and services designed to promote and streamline exports. We work closely with the American Hardwood Export Council (AHEC) to promote North American hardwoods at international trade shows and exhibitions. Chief Inspector Dana Spessert has introduced NHLA grading rules and standards to audiences around the world for more than 15 years. In addition, NHLA’s Kiln Drying Certification Program helps exporters save time and money by meeting the same objectives as the APHIS Phytosanitary Certificate at a lower cost.
While NHLA does not provide transportation services, many of our Sustaining Members specialize in global logistics and freight forwarding. These companies can be found through the Member Directory on the NHLA website under Equipment, Services & Supplies. Current NHLA members providing these services are Dunavant Global Logistics Group, Fr. Meyer’s Sohn NA, Interglobo North America, King City Forwarding, Laufer Group International, Manitoulin Global Forwarding, Point Global Logistics, The AGL Group, and TMX Shipping Co. Establishing a relation-ship with an experienced freight forwarder is essential when navigating international trade, and the breadth of NHLA’s membership offers valuable opportunities to connect with trusted service providers. We encourage members to take advantage of the products, services, and expertise available through our Sustaining Members in support of their global business efforts.
