Investing in the Industry’s Future

NHLA members know that workforce development remains one of the most pressing challenges facing the hardwood industry. One of the most effective ways to address that challenge is by introducing students and educators to real, hands-on career pathways—something NHLA continues to prioritize through the Inspector Training School (ITS) and the National Hardwood Academy (NHA).
To support this effort, NHLA will host an Inspector Training School Open House on Tuesday, April 22, designed to give students and educators an inside look at hardwood inspection careers and the training that supports them.
STRENGTHENING THE HARDWOOD WORKFORCE Graduates of NHLA’s Inspector Training School are highly sought after by employers across the hardwood sector. The program provides rigorous training in lumber grading, quality control, and industry standards—skills that are critical to mill operations, trad-ing, and overall industry credibility.
By opening ITS to students and educators, NHLA is helping build awareness of these career opportunities early, strengthening the future workforce pipeline that members rely on.
ABOUT THE OPEN HOUSE
The open house is geared toward high school students, their parents, and educators interested in manufacturing, forestry, and skilled trade careers. Attendees will experience:
• A guided tour of the ITS facility
• An overview of classroom instruction and hands-on training
• Insight into program expectations and certification pathways
• Information on ITSEF scholarship opportunities
• Discussion of long-term career paths within the hardwood industry
The program will conclude with boxed lunches, and NHLA will provide student packets and swag bags.
HELP SPREAD THE WORD
NHLA members are encouraged to share this opportunity with:
• Local high schools or technical programs
• Educators, counselors, or workforce coordinators
• Students or families interested in careers in manufacturing, forestry, or the hardwood industry
By helping connect the next generation to hardwood careers, members play an important role in sustaining the industry’s workforce—and its future.
Anyone interested in attending the open house should RSVP to Ashley Johnson at a.johnson@nhla.com by April 17.
