The Lumber Inspector is responsible for visually inspecting and grading hardwood lumber according to NHLA rules and guidelines. This role ensures lumber is accurately sorted, tallied, and moved through production efficiently.
Key Responsibilities
Visually inspect, measure, and grade hardwood lumber to NHLA standards
Identify defects such as knots, splits, wane, checking, stain, and other quality-impacting characteristics
Determine proper grade, thickness, and species classification
Mark boards clearly and accurately with the correct grade/designation
Work collaboratively with sawmill, edger, and resaw teams to ensure maximum yield and consistency
Maintain accurate tallies and documentation for inventory and shipments
Communicate quality concerns or recurring sawing issues to production supervisors
Assist in maintaining a clean, safe work environment
Requirements
Experience with NHLA lumber inspection—NHLA Inspector certification strongly preferred
Strong knowledge of hardwood species common to Michigan markets (e.g., red oak, hard/soft maple, ash, hickory, cherry, basswood, etc.)
Ability to consistently apply NHLA rules in a fast-paced production environment
Strong attention to detail and ability to make quick, accurate decisions
Ability to lift up to 30–50 lbs and stand for extended periods

Preferred Qualifications
MUST BE A NHLA SCHOOL GRADUATE OR 5 YEARS PRIOR EXPERIENCE IN A SAW MILL GRADING HARDWOOD LUMBER ACCORDING TO NHLA RULES.
Familiarity with lumber tally systems, scanners, or grading software
