Nestled in the Endless Mountains of North Central Pennsylvania, Dwight Lewis Lumber is a fourth-generation, family-owned sawmill and timber management company managing over 15,000 acres of forest. We are FSC Certified and committed to sustainable and renewable forest management practices. Our operations include a modern sawmill and dry kiln facilities.
Position Overview
We are seeking a skilled Lumber Grader to join our team. This role is responsible for grading hardwood lumber according to NHLA standards to ensure quality, consistency, and customer satisfaction. The ideal candidate will have strong knowledge of lumber grading rules, attention to detail, and a commitment to safety and efficiency.
Required Skills & Experience
Duties & Responsibilities
• Grade hardwood lumber according to NHLA rules and company standards.
• Inspect lumber for defects, species, and quality to determine grade.
• Ensure accurate tallying and recording of graded lumber.
• Work closely with production staff to maintain consistent quality standards.
• Monitor lumber flow and assist in optimizing production efficiency.
• Communicate with management regarding quality issues or improvements.
• Maintain a clean and organized grading area in compliance with OSHA safety standards.
• Provide training and guidance to junior staff on grading practices.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications & Skills
• Thorough understanding of NHLA hardwood lumber grading rules.
• Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
• Ability to identify species, defects, and characteristics of hardwood lumber.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
• Knowledge of safety practices, guidelines, and regulations.
• Effective communication skills and ability to work in a team environment.
• Valid PA Driver’s License required.
Education & Experience
• High school diploma or GED required; vocational training in forestry or wood technology preferred.
• NHLA certification preferred
• Minimum 2 years of lumber grading experience preferred.
Physical Requirements
• Prolonged periods of standing, bending, and lifting.
• Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
• Visual acuity for inspecting lumber quality and defects.
• Manual dexterity for handling and sorting lumber.
Salary & Benefits
$20.00 per hour, depending on experience; full-time, 40 hours per week + minimum 5 hours overtime weekly.
