Species Guide Basswood Jump to Species The Basics Species Overview Basswood is a light weight species renowned for its creamy color and ability to be machined and shaped accurately into thin sections, and as a premium wood for carving. The sap of basswood tends to be large and is creamy white in color giving way to the heartwood that is pale to reddish brown. It may display dark streaks which are not a defect. The difference between sap and heartwood is small and may be indistinct. The wood of basswood has a fine uniform texture and straight grain, which is not distinct. The trees are generally large in height and diameter, often with straight trunks and relatively free of limbs. Basswood can be found growing throughout the United States in natural hardwood forests. Forest Inventory Analysis (FIA) data shows U.S. basswood growing stock is 210 million m3, 1.4% of total U.S. hardwood growing stock. American basswood is growing 3.3 million m3 per year while the harvest is 1.7 million m3 per year. The net volume (after harvest) is increasing by 1.6 million m3 each year. U.S. basswood growth exceeds or is in balance with harvest in all the main producing states. Basswood is available in relatively limited volumes compared to some other species, both as sawn lumber and veneer. Lumber is available in a range of grades and thickness from 4/4” (25.4mm) right through to 16/4” (102mm) due to its ease of drying. Not to be confused with Australian gum (Eucalypt). Sap gum has a fine uniform texture, but has irregular grain, usually interlocked, often with an attractive grain figure. Job Opening Detail Sawmill Foreman Berdoll Sawmill Sawmill Foreman Berdoll Sawmill Cedar Creek, TX Position Description Berdoll Sawmill is a small, specialty hardwood sawmill looking for a Sawmill Foreman. As the mill owner, I am looking to step back from day to day operations and looking for a self-driven individual with high ethical standards and an appreciation for high quality work to step into that role. In this role, a good candidate will recognize tasks around the mill that need to be completed and prioritize those tasks. The foreman will also lead 2-5 others and assist them in prioritizing their work on a day to day basis. Daily tasks include creating the work plan for the day, ensuring logs are being sawn in the most efficient manner, monitoring of kilns, and surfacing of lumber/slabs. I am looking for a “go to person” that can make the “it depends” decisions that come with the nature of working with wood. Keeping the work area neat, clean and organized is important and I’m looking for someone that takes the same pride in their work area. Required Skills & Experience Significant experience in the sawmill/lumber/furniture industry is preferred, but lack of experience can be overcome if the candidate has an intense desire to learn and a good work ethic. Being mechanically inclined, able to make basic repairs on machinery, and oversee the PM of the machinery are required skills. Job Opening Detail Lumber Buyer Cole Hardwood Lumber Buyer Cole Hardwood Logansport, IN Position Description • Purchase green hardwood species that align with company goals for quality, cost, and timeliness. • Maintain and manage a large lumber inventory, ensuring proper levels to meet production demand. • Stay current on market trends, species pricing, and regional availability to make informed purchasing decisions. • Apply NHLA grading standards to inspect lumber in the field and assess supplier loads for quality and consistency. • Travel regularly to sawmills to build and maintain vendor relationships, evaluate operations, and inspect inventory. • Actively work with production and kiln operations to ensure the quality of purchased lumber. • Manage contracts, databases, purchase records, source lists, and assess supplier performance tracking. • Monitor supplier compliance with company specifications and expectations for reliability, communication, and product quality. • Represent the company in a professional manner and always strive to enhance our reputation in the hardwood lumber community. Required Skills & Experience • Minimum 5 years of experience purchasing domestic hardwood lumber, with applied knowledge of NHLA grading rules. • Proven understanding of hardwood terminology, species characteristics, and sawmill operations. • A four-year degree in an applicable field is preferred—relevant industry experience strongly valued • Skilled at working independently on multiple priorities, managing time, and delivering consistent results. • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including clear documentation and active listening. • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (especially Excel); experience with inventory management systems is a plus. • Ability and willingness to travel regionally to sawmills and supplier sites.
